How to Survive Your First Yoga Class
There are many factors to take into account in order to survive and most importantly enjoy your first yoga class. First choose a yoga studio that fits you, ask family and friends for recommendations, remember yoga is a relaxation practice, so you do not want to end up in an uptight place where you cannot relax and be yourself. Find out what type of yoga is best for you; you can switch to different types as you go along.
Be Comfortable
Wear snug, breathable clothing; you want to be able to move your body in all directions, see your shape on the mirror and wear something light, believe it or not, you will sweat in yoga, trying to keep a series of poses and holding them still requires a lot of energy from you.Don't Starve
Make sure you are hydrated before starting class, and eat something light, like an apple, a yogurt, or an orange; you need some food in your system, some fuel to burn.Be On Time
Arrive to class early, about 5 to 10 minutes before class starts, this will give you time to find a good spot in the studio, get your mat and other gear ready (straps, blocks, blankets, etc), talk to your instructor, and stretch before hand.Pay Attention
When the class starts pay attention to what the instructor is saying, in yoga it is very important to do all poses correctly and breathe, you do not want to be twisting the wrong way and hurt your spine. If there are some poses that seem too hard at the beginning, ask your instructor for help in achieving the pose or for an easier modification. Yoga is all about practice, no one expects you to be a perfect yogi on your first try, not even on your first year. So take your time, you will notice great improvement as you continue this practice.Don't Try Too Hard
It is also important to remember not to overwork yourself; make sure to take breaks if you are suddenly feeling very tired, ask your instructor for an easy stretchy pose to try if you cannot do what the group is doing. And you are done! Whether you took the one hour or hour and half class, you did it! Feel proud, feel renovated, and a little sore, most importantly come back soon. Remember yoga is a stress reliever, so enjoy; continue your workout every other day to see great results, not only in your practice, but in your flexibility, body contour and firm up.
